George Hook promises to buy dinner for the fan who outwits him at Heineken Star Predictor!
Ulster, Munster, Connacht and Leinster fans put George Hook under pressure at the Heineken Rugby Social gathering in Harry Byrne’s, Clontarf.
George Hook set a challenge for Heineken® Cup fans this season when he put his match predictions to the ultimate test with Heineken’s Star Predictor, the online match prediction game. Under pressure from over 60 fans representing all four Irish Heineken® Cup teams, Hook did not disappoint the gathering of dyed-in-the-wool fans expecting a ruck.
In bullish form, Hook ruffled a few Leinster feathers when he said he would not pick Gordon D’Arcy for Leinster’s starting XV and called Connacht’s Dan Parks an “average tap dancer”. In a telling insight on Munster’s loyal servant, Hook confirmed that Ronan O’Gara faces his ‘biggest challenge’ now that Ian Keatley is making his mark in the Munster set-up.
Former Ireland and Lion’s manager Donal Lenihan and New Zealand rugby pundit Brent Pope were also present to make their predictions and challenge fans to make theirs, using Heineken® Star Predictor. Laying down a marker for Heineken® Cup fans, George Hook said: “If I am beaten, comprehensively, then I will buy that person dinner!”
Speaking at the event, Donal Lenihan said: “I’m playing Heineken® Star Predictor to beat George. It’s great, every Monday morning you’ll want to see how you are doing. George’s prediction rate is not more than twenty per cent so I will want to finish the league on top of the pile!”
The former Irish international believes that Connacht will pick up three wins from its Heineken® Cup group but put out a warning for Ulster fans: “It’s too early for [fly-half] Paddy Jackson, he was rushed last season, he is not a Ronan O’Gara.”
When asked for his match predictions Brent Pope was clear: “Ulster are the form team.” The New Zealander backed Connacht to prove they can play attacking rugby by winning two of their pool games and agreed with Lenihan that Munster can win away to Racing Metro in their opening game of the Heineken Cup in Paris this Saturday.
The 18th season of the Heineken® Cup kicks off this Friday with tough matches for all Irish teams. Ulster host Castres Olympique at Ravenhill while the next day Leinster welcome Heineken® Cup debutants Exeter Chiefs to the RDS. Munster travel to Paris to face Racing Metro and Connacht are back in Italy for an opening match against newcomers Zebre.
